Long Beach Baseball Legend Randy Moffitt Has Passed

Moffitt was the third player from Long Beach State baseball to reach the major leagues.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The family of Randy Moffitt announced that the Long Beach baseball legend passed away August 28 in Long Beach at the age of 76 after an extended illness. Moffitt played for 12 seasons in Major League Baseball with three teams after playing collegiately with Long Beach State.
 
Moffitt played for two seasons for Long Beach State under Bob Weusthoff before being drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 1st round (18th pick) of the 1970 draft.  He spent one year as a starting pitcher for the Class-A Fresno Giants before moving up to Triple-A Phoenix Giants in 1971, where he was converted to a relief pitcher. He made his Major League Baseball debut with San Francisco on June 11, 1972. In 534 career pitching appearances (all but one in relief) he finished 306 games including 96 saves. Four times he finished in the National League Top 10 in saves and three times in number of games pitched.
 
Born in Long Beach, Calif., Moffitt was the son of Bill and Betty Moffitt and a graduate of Long Beach Polytechnic High School and Long Beach State.  He was added to the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame in 2008 and was part of the inaugural class inducted into the Long Beach State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986.
 
Moffitt was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his daughters Miranda Harrah and her husband, Rusty, and Alysha Gosse and her husband, James, as well as grandchildren Evan Harrah, Cason Harrah, Byron Gosse and Derek Gosse and his sister Billie Jean Moffitt King and her wife, Ilana Kloss.
