Dirtbag alum, former MLB draft pick, and CWS coach set to oversee Long Beach State hitting
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State head baseball coach TJ Bruce announced today the hiring of former Dirtbags standout Jeff Tagliaferri as an assistant coach. Tagliaferri will serve as the team's hitting coach.
"I'm very excited to welcome Jeff back to Dirtbag Nation as our hitting coach," Bruce said. "Hiring Tags means bringing on a professional who consistently delivers results with integrity, creativity, and precision. His ability to lead, build relationships, communicate, collaborate, and innovate makes him an invaluable asset to our program."
A familiar face in Long Beach, Tagliaferri was a three-year letterwinner for the Dirtbags from 1994-96, helping lead the program to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. He finished his collegiate career batting .306 with 17 home runs and 105 RBI, including a standout 1996 season where he hit .307 with nine home runs and 39 RBI. Drafted by the San Francisco Giants out of Kennedy High School in Granada Hills in the 38th round of the 1993 MLB Draft, Tagliaferri later signed with the Detroit Tigers after being selected in the 22nd round of the 1996 Draft. He played one season of professional baseball with the Jamestown Jammers of the New York-Penn League, hitting .313 with 13 multi-hit games.
Tagliaferri returned to Long Beach State in 1998 working with the hitters as a member of the coaching, where he helped guide the Dirtbags to the College World Series.
Afterward, he transitioned into private business and has since established himself as a successful entrepreneur, currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Raven Props LLC.
"I'm honored and grateful for the opportunity to return to Long Beach State as a coach at my Alma mater," Tagliaferri said. "This program shaped me as both a player and a person, and to now have the chance to give back and help develop the next generation of Dirtbags on and off the field is a dream come true. I'm excited to pour my passion, energy, and experience into this program and continue building on the tradition of toughness and excellence that makes Long Beach State so special."
Bruce added, "Tags knows winning. As a member of the last Dirtbag team to go to Omaha as hitting coach, he understands what it takes to compete at the highest level. Dirtbag Nation, please join me in welcoming the Tagliaferri family back home."
