Women’s Water Polo Advances To Big West Championship Semifinals After Dominant Win Over CSUN

Eleven players scored in the win with senior Martina Cardona leading the offense with four goals.
IRVINE, Calif. – Martina Cardona's perfect day of shooting led No. 2 seed Long Beach State to a dominant win over No. 7 seed CSUN to clinch a spot into the conference tournament semifinals. The senior attacker added four goals and passed the 150 career goals mark.
CSUN (16-13) started off strong opening a quick two goal lead. Long Beach State (16-10) went on a 3-0 run to take the lead for the first time after Grace Cuozzo, Brooklyn Plomp and Martina Cardona all added goals in the quarter.
A strong second quarter by LBSU opened a six-goal gap at the end of the second quarter. Led by the Spaniards scoring six out of the seven goals in the quarter, Long Beach State headed into the halftime up 10-4.
Cardona extended the lead for the Beach adding her fourth of the game. The Matadors answered back but LBSU added back to back goals with freshmen centers Daniela Quinzada Gonzalez and Gaby Patenaude. Keeping the momentum, the Beach extended their lead to 16-7 after three quarters.
After two goals by the Beach, CSUN got one in past the Beach defense to make it 18-8 early in the last quarter. Four unanswered goals by LBSU secured the semifinal spot for the Beach after a 22-8 win over the Matadors.
Cardona led the Beach with four goals while Patenaude and Elisa Portillo added a hat trick each. Ellie Goren, Zelma Koka, Quinzada Gonzalez and Plomp added a pair of goals each. Jamie Oberman, Rita Gurri Capel, Jermonie Billingsly and Cuozzo all added one to the scoresheet. Chelsea Oliver added seven stops and Charlotte Echlin added six.
Long Beach State now awaits for the winner of the matchup between UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara to know their semifinal opponent. First sprint for the semifinal is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+ and live stats provided through thefosh.net.
