Bats Power Way To 13-7 Win To Close UC Santa Barbara Series

4/13/2025 4:13:00 PM | Softball

Makayla Medellin had a home run and six RBI as the Beach piled up a season-high in runs.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The offense for Long Beach State came through in a big way and freshman Brynne Nally shut the door as Beach Softball came away with a 13-7 win to finish their trip to UC Santa Barbara.

Long Beach State (19-18, 9-9 Big West) opened the action with a big inning in the second. Corissa Sweet drew a leadoff walk to start the inning, and singles from Carly Robbins and Avery Weisbrook loaded the bases with no outs. Jacquelyn Bickar then had the first big hit of the day, a two-run single to put two runs on the board, and then a three-run home run from freshman Priscilla Iniguez, her fourth of the season made the score 5-0 in favor of the Beach.

Going right back to work in the third, with two runners on, a single from Selena Perez made the score 6-0, a double from Bickar added one more and a Makayla Medellin single put the Beach up 8-0 in the top of the third.

UC Santa Barbara (24-18, 13-5 Big West) did not give in. After two walks, a Bella Fuentes single scored a first run, and a Tehya Banks single added one more for the Gauchos bringing up Emily Carr with the bases loaded. After two home runs yesterday, Carr again had the number of LBSU, hitting a grand slam to make the score 8-6 after three.

The Beach bats battled back once more with a two-out rally in the fourth. With runners on the corners after a hit batter and a single from Perez, Bickar walked to load the bases and Medellin cleared them with a double into the gap, increasing the lead to 11-6.

The long ball continued to play in the later innings, as Perez had her third hit of the day in front of Medellin, who also had her third hit of the game, a two-run home run to center field to extend the lead. Delaina Ma'ae hit a solo home run for the Gauchos, but that was the lone run surrendered by Brynne Nally over four innings of relief for the freshman on the way to her fifth win of the season.

Long Beach State will return to the LBSU Softball Complex starting on Friday, hosting UC Riverside for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on April 18 at 3 p.m.
