Long Beach State Grabs Two Wins To Close Big West Challenge

No. 8 Beach Volleyball won a championship rematch against No. 17 Hawaii.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – No.8 Beach Volleyball finished the Big West Challenge with a 5-1 overall record, picking up two wins Sunday to close the tournament against UC Davis and No. 18 Hawai'i.
Long Beach State (14-5) swept UC Davis (10-6) in the opening match of the day. The third and fourth flight put points on the board simultaneously to jump to a 2-0 dual lead. Down 16-9 in the first set, Julia Westby and Haley Carrington went on a huge run, scoring ten straight points to go up 19-16 before closing out the win in set one, going on to a two-set win to clinch the dual for the Beach. Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah completed the sweep for the Beach with a thrilling three set win.
The Beach took all first sets in the match against Hawaii (10-12). The fifth set flight of Megan Widener and Demi Wagdy had a dominant second set to take their opponents in straight sets. The fourth flight pair of Tineke Hinton and Mahala Esser also kept their opponents to a low score in the second set as they closed out their game. Julia Westby and Haley Carrington battled to win their match in two and close out the win for Long Beach State.
The Beach will head to Louisiana to play in the Death Volley Invitational on March 28 and 29.
