Long Beach State grabbed a win to end the Battle for L.A.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Beach split the final day of the Battle for L.A. as they lost to No. 3 USC and beat No. 16 University of Washington.

Long Beach State (3-3) started the day against USC (8-2), falling 4-1. The fourth flight pair of Natalie Glenn and Savannah Standage were the lone dual point for the Beach. Tough serving from Glenn helped them to win the first set. The second set saw the Beach down 12-6. They were able to bring it back within one at 15-14, but USC went on a run to force a third set. The Beach was down to begin the third but brought it back with an ace serve from Glenn. Standage got a kill as the fourth flight pair won their match.

The Beach was also able to pick up a close first set at the second flight. Julia Westby and Haley Carrington beat their opponents 21-17 with a block from Westby. The second set was close until the Trojans went on a run. The third set saw the lead go back and forth between the teams until USC (8-2) grabbed a tool off the block. USC had a 2-0 lead in the dual and the clinching point came from the fifth flight.

In the second match of the day, Long Beach State defeated Washington (3-5) winning 4-1. The Beach came out swinging as Carrington and Westby took their opponent in straight sets. The dual was tied 1-1 as the Huskies won the fourth flight. Standage and Glenn held their opponents to only 10 points in the first set. Glenn had seven solo blocks as the pair won their match in two sets to put Long Beach State up 2-1 in the dual. Demi Wagdy and Megan Widener were the clinching dual point for the Beach at the fifth flight. They played a dominant first set against Washington and continued their momentum to win in two sets. The first flight pair of Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah had a three-set battle with the Huskies. The third set saw the Beach trailing, but the pair quickly picked it up and maintained a two-point lead until the end.

The Beach will have their home opener this Saturday, March 8. They will play Mercer, USM, Vanguard and No. 5 Loyola Marymount.
