Elisa Portillo’s Career-High Leads The Beach To An Overtime Win Against No. 6 UC Irvine

Portillo added seven goals while Spaniards combined for 13 of 14 goals.
IRVINE, Calif. – Martina Cardona and Elisa Portillo combined for 11 goals to lead No. 7 Long Beach State to an overtime win over No. 6 UC Irvine, 14-13. Portillo netted a career-high of seven goals including the game winner.
The Anteaters (4-8) opened the game with a quick goal, but freshman Rita Gurri Capel answered back to tie the game. UCI's 3-0 run closed the first quarter, 4-1.
Portillo scored three straight goals in under two minutes to tie the for the Beach, 4-4 but the Anteaters closed the second quarter with another 3-0 run to take the lead into halftime, 7-4.
The Beach (7-8) started the third quarter with a counterattack goal by Daniela Quinzada Gonzalez shortening the lead but UCI answered but a goal by Martina Cardona kept the Beach within two. A 4-0 run by the Beach to close the quarter gave the first lead of the game heading into the fourth.
Cardona extended the Beach lead early on the fourth, 11-9 before UCI quickly answered and Portillo's sixth goal of the game made 12-10 with five minutes left. The Anteaters tied the game with one second left and took the game into overtime.
UCI kept the momentum of the buzzer beater into the first period of overtime scoring right after the whistle. Cardona's fourth of the game tied one more time, 13-13 after the first extra period. A counterattack by Portillo gave the Beach the win over UCI, 14-13 and the seventh place at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
The Beach will be back at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center to open Big West play hosting UC Santa Barbara (11-7) on Saturday at Noon.
