Beach Tennis Shows Grit Once Again In 4-3 Road Win

Long Beach State has won three straight matches in the last match.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Coming down to the final match once again, Daria Malaescu delivered again, defeating Anastasia Bozova to help Long Beach State grab a 4-3 road win over Loyola Marymount from Los Angeles.
Malaescu won the deciding point in the team's last match against San Diego State, and delivered in the clutch again on Thursday. The freshman lost her first set against Bozova, but bounced back to win in thrilling fashion in a match-deciding tiebreaker 7-5 to clinch the match with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 victory.
"Today was an impressive road win over a very veteran team," said head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "I'm very proud of our resilience and fight today."
Long Beach State (4-2) started the day by taking the doubles point on the road at Loyola Marymount (2-5). In the top flight, Cecilia Costa and Johanna Hiesmair cruised to a 6-2 win over Anastasia Bozovia and Stefania Rogozinska-Dzik, an impressive win coming over a team that entered Thursday ranked No. 48 in the nation.
The other two matches went to tiebreakers, one breaking for each team as the Beach won 7-6 in the second flight behind Diana De Simone and Thea Jagare, while falling 7-6 in the third flight to Camilia Samel-Druz and Kim Michaela Zahraj of the Lions.
Two more matches were settled quickly, as Pamela Badillo lost to Fiona Arrese, 6-1, 6-1, but Thea Jagare quickly put the Beach back in front in the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Isabel Tcherkes-Zade.
That pattern repeated in a pair of three-set matches, as the Lions evened the match with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 win by Zahraj over Daisy Carpenter, but the Beach answered quickly as Costa was a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 winner in the second flight over Samel-Druz. In the top flight, Rogozinska-Dzik was able to defeat De Simone, setting up the stage for the thrilling finish.
Beach Tennis will take the weekend off, preparing for their longest road trip of the season as Long Beach State will travel to the East Coast for three matches around Washington D.C., facing Georgetown on February 27, Navy on February 28 and George Washington on March 1.
