Daria Malaescu clinched the win with a three-set victory over Ninon Martinache.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State finished off their first two home matches at the Rhodes Tennis Center with two wins, defeating San Diego State 4-2 Sunday behind a match-clinching win from Daria Malaescu in singles.
"A big win for us today over a Top 50 program in San Diego State," said head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "This young team learned from the loss last week and showed today that they will fight as a team for every point. We had to come from behind in a number of matches today. Very gritty win!"
The doubles point proved to be an early difference maker for Long Beach State (3-2). Cecilia Costa and Johanna Hiesmair wasted no time, rolling to a commanding 6-1 victory in the top flight against Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul. After San Diego State (4-3) countered with a win on court two, Daisy Carpenter and Paulina Franco delivered under pressure, earning a 6-4 decision to lock up the first point of the day for the Beach.
Zoe Olmos evened the score for San Diego State with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Pamela Badillo, and Cecilia Costa dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Jo-Yee Chan as San Diego State took a brief lead in the match.
Long Beach State bounced back with a win in the top flight, as freshman Diana De Simone defeated Yasmine Kabbaj 6-3, 6-3 to even the score at 2-2. Thea Jagare then finished off the first of two important comeback wins, grabbing a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Gloria Alogo.
With Long Beach State in the lead and needing just one win from the final two matches, it was Daria Malaescu who delivered. Losing the first set 6-1 to Ninon Martinache in the fourth flight, but Malaescu rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win to decide the match. Daisy Carpenter's match ended unfinished in the third set.
Long Beach State will travel to Loyola Marymount for a non-conference match next Thursday, February 20 for the team's next match, their only action of the week.
