Women’s Water Polo Faces Top Ranked USC On The Road

The Beach takes on the Trojans in their only game this week.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – For the first time since 2012, No. 9 Long Beach State will face No. 1 Southern California at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Beach (5-5) comes from a week with no games after playing at the Triton Invite. At the tournament the Beach had a 3-1 record, defeating No. 21 San Diego State, No. 11 UC San Diego and No. 7 UC Davis while dropping the contest against No. 6 UC Irvine, finishing in fifth place.
Long Beach State is led by the Spaniards Matina Cardona and Elisa Portillo who combine over 45 goals in the season. Senior Jamie Oberman has been a force in the Beach defense while also showing impact on offense, scoring nine goals and adding 12 assists. In the cage, senior Chelsea Oliver and sophomore Charlotte Echlin have made over 100 saves to help the Beach on defense.
The Trojans (10-0) secured the top of the rankings after defeating defending National Champions UCLA at the Triton Invite, 14-11. USC remains unbeaten after hosting Biola and No. 6 UC Irvine this past weekend. The Trojans cruised past the Eagles, 24-7 while defeating the Anteaters on a high scoring game, 19-15.
Leading the Trojans is the Olympic duo of Emily Asmus, who represented Team USA, and Australian silver medalist, Tilly Kerns, with 37 and 36 goals, respectively. Asmus leads the team with 24 assists while Kerns has a team-high of 14 steals in the year. On defense, Jada Ward, adds 46 saves, two assists and two steals to lead top ranked Trojans to an undefeated season so far.
