Natalie Arnold scored her third goal in three games in the loss.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Long Beach State's six-game unbeaten run came to an end Thursday at Cal State Bakersfield, as two goals bookending the halftime break gave the Runners a 2-1 victory over the Beach.
Cal State Bakersfield (5-6-2, 2-2-1 Big West) picked up the first shot of the game in the fourth minute, but Long Beach State (4-5-3, 1-1-2 Big West) quickly turned around the momentum. Brooklyn Antonucci put a shot on frame, saved by Kamy Anaya by pushing the shot onto the crossbar.
The Beach kept pushing, earning another corner and working towards another shot, this time from Jordan Candelaria. The initial effort was saved but Natalie Arnold was ready for the rebound, scoring her third goal in three games to put the Beach in front 1-0 after the 14th minute.
Long Beach State continued to press the action, sending through Cherrie Cox on goal but Anaya was up the challenge again, and a long cross from Candelaria was just outside of the reach of Lopez as the half came to a close. The Beach outshot the Runners 12-5 in the first, but CSUB evened the score in the final minutes, as CJ Walters headed home a cross from Cynthia Ramirez with just 13 seconds left in the half.
Cal State Bakersfield took that momentum into the second half, as Kim Garcia opened the second 45 with a shot just wide of the goal, and Isis Salazar Ortega then headed home a Ramirez cross to give the Runners a 2-1 lead in the 54th minute.
Junior Aurora Schuck was called into action more in the second half, as Long Beach State continued to defend well after losing the lead, making five saves, all in the second half, one off her season high.
The Beach held off that pressure and changed the direction of the game, winning a series of corners that resulted in a number of shots, the best coming as Natelle El Mokbel forced Anaya into a near-post save in the 79th minute.
Continuing to build, Raddison Banks found Cox near the penalty spot as the junior turned and fired, but Anaya came up with a big save once more for Cal State Bakersfield to hold off the Beach in the closing minutes.
Long Beach State continues their road trip on Sunday, taking on UC Davis at 1 p.m. from UC Davis on ESPN+.
