Cox Leads Long Beach State Past UC Davis

The fifth goal of the season for Cox was the game-winner from Davis.
DAVIS, Calif. – Long Beach State limited UC Davis to just one shot on target and got a key goal of their own from junior Cherrie Cox as the Beach closed their road trip with a 1-0 win over the Aggies.
Long Beach State (5-5-3, 2-1-2 Big West) outshot UC Davis (2-9-4, 0-5-1 Big West) eight to two in the first half and quickly got to work, as Radisson Banks sent a cross to Natelle El Mokbel that was saved by Cat Pieper within the first five minutes. UC Davis had their best opportunity of the half in the 11th, but the Beach was able to clear the danger in the box before Aurora Schuck was called into action in goal.
Brooklyn Antonucci had a shot from distance that was saved by Pieper in the 20th minute, and then El Mokbel slotted a shot past Pieper that nicked off the outside of the post in the 23rd.
All of that pressure finally paid off for Long Beach State in a first-half breakthrough. Cox was able to dribble into the box and ripped a right-footed shot that was too hot to handle for Pieper in the 29th minute, giving the Beach a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Kailey Sup had another strong opportunity in the closing seconds of the first half, but Pieper was able to push the ball into the crossbar on a diving save to end the first.
Each team made one save in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but Long Beach State controlled the action through most of the second half, limiting Aggie chances until the final minutes. Chasing the equalizer, UC Davis won a late corner in the final 90 seconds, but Long Beach State managed the set piece and held on for the 1-0 win on the road.
Long Beach State will return to George Allen Field for their final homestand of the regular season, playing three straight at home. That run begins on Thursday, October 16 when Long Beach State hosts Cal Poly at 6 p.m.
