An early goal proved to be the difference as the Mustangs held off the Beach.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State had 64 percent of possession in the first game of a three-game homestand at George Allen Field, but a 21st minute goal from Madelyn Dougherty gave the Mustangs a lead Cal Poly was able to hold in a 1-0 win Thursday night.

Long Beach State (5-6-3, 2-2-2 Big West) opened the game positively, working towards a shot from Jordan Candelaria in the opening minutes. Kailey Supa was then able to force Shannon Porubski into the first of her four saves on the evening for Cal Poly (6-2-8, 4-2-1) as LBSU controlled the early action.

The turning point in the contest came early, however, as Ava Mirelez lofted a hopeful ball into the box which landed for Dougherty, who was able to lift the ball just over Aurora Shuck and give Cal Poly the lead on their first shot of the contest.

The Mustangs would take just four more shots total in the game as opposed to 12 for Long Beach State and had less than 40% possession, as the Beach continued to build pressure. Radisson Banks earned a corner that ended in a header for Supa just wide before the end of the half.

The Beach continued to build more strong chances. Banks and Ameera White combined for a shot for Banks that just grazed off the top of the crossbar in the 59th minute. Banks then earned a free kick directly in front of the center of goal outside of the penalty box in the 76th, but Porubski was equal to the effort on the set piece from Banks to seal the win and the shutout despite eight second half shots for LBSU as opposed to just two for Cal Poly.
