Long Beach State outshot the Gauchos 19-5 while gaining a crucial Big West point.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State controlled much of the action Sunday against UC Santa Barbara, outshooting the Gauchos 19-5 and finishing the weekend with a 1-1 tie after a second-half Radisson Banks equalizer.
Both teams spent much of the first half getting settled in, as Long Beach State (5-6-4, 2-2-3 Big West) held UC Santa Barbara (10-3-4, 3-1-3 Big West) to just one shot in the first half as neither team got on the board in the first 45 minutes.
Natalie Arnold worked the first shot of the game in the eighth minute, and Charlotte Luhr, playing off of the bench, had the first shot on target for either team in the 28th minute. Long Beach State's best opportunity came just before the end of the half, as Makena Irvine was able to turn from the right side of the box but sent her shot just across the face of the goal.
Ameera White opened the second half's offensive action with a long-distance effort that was saved by UCSB keeper Maddie Buckley. Minutes later, UC Santa Barbara finally broke the deadlock on just their second shot of the contest. A cross from Haley Phillips was headed home by Caitlyn Simons in the 53rd minute to give the Gauchos a 1-0 lead.
Battling back, Long Beach State immediately seized back the momentum. Brooklyn Antonucci made a long run from the back, dribbling through and hitting the side netting in the 63rd, and the push to equalize was on.
Radisson Banks smashed a shot off of the crossbar in the 68th minute, and Antonucci matched that with another shot off of the crossbar in the 73rd.
Taking the ensuing corner, the entry from Natelle El Mokbel was cleared by UCSB but only as far as the junior Banks, who smashed a volley off of the left post and in to tie the game at 1-1. With the complexion of the game changed, it was time for the keepers to shine, as Antonucci forced Buckley into a diving save in the 81st minute, and Aurora Shuck for the Beach came up with a diving save of her own in the 87th to help preserve the draw as the Gauchos worked to steal the game on the counter.
Long Beach State finishes off their regular season home schedule on Thursday, October 23 when they host UC San Diego at George Allen Field at 6 p.m. Live coverage will be provided by ESPN+.
