Long Beach State was unable to find the breakthrough in a 0-0 tie in the final game of the regular season at George Allen Field.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State once again outshot their opponent at home, 12-8 against the Tritons, but UC San Diego goalkeeper Charlotte Wilfert was up to the challenge in a big moment as the teams finished the game deadlocked at 0-0.
Both teams took time settling into the game, as Alexis Nguyen got the first shot of the contest for UC San Diego (4-6-7, 2-3-3 Big West) but Aurora Schuck handled the save confidently.
Long Beach State (5-6-5, 2-2-4 Big West) then turned up the pressure. Malea Johnson was able to send a ball in the box to Radisson Banks, but her effort was headed off the line by the UCSD defense, and then in the 22nd, a shot from Johnson was saved by Wilfert. Minutes later, Long Beach State picked up their third of four shots in the first, a good opportunity from Ameera White that was just high of the net in a great stretch of play for the Beach.
Coming out of the half, Long Beach State nearly pulled off some magic of their own, as Kylie Perez sent a ball into the box which was controlled by Banks into a bicycle kick, but Wilfert came up big in the moment, leaping to tip the ball over the bar to keep the score locked at zero. Julie Lopez had a strong header in the 55th, as the Beach piled up eight shots in the second half but could not find the net.
With the Tritons chasing the game, Schuck made her fifth save of the game on a counter opportunity from Ava Tibor, closing out her fifth shutout of the year as the teams shared the honors on Thursday night.
Long Beach State will close the season on the road, first facing Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m. on Sunday before finishing the regular season at CSUN on Thursday, October 30.
