Cal State Fullerton Downs Long Beach State 1-0

An own goal given up by the Beach in the final ten minutes was the difference between the teams.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State once again controlled the majority of possession and limited Cal State Fullerton to just two shots on goal, but an own goal in the dying minutes allowed the Titans to take a 1-0 win in Fullerton Sunday evening.

Long Beach State (5-7-5, 2-3-4 Big West) had 56% of possession on the night and outshot Cal State Fullerton (12-2-3, 5-2-2 Big West) 16-8, but an unfortunate touch proved to be the difference as the Titans won the game despite just two shots on goal, both easily controlled by junior goalkeeper Aurora Schuck.

The Beach quickly put the pressure on the Titans, picking up two early shots and then a solid chance for Radisson Banks on a half volley that just went high in the 10th minute. Five minutes later, the Beach secured another great opportunity off a corner, finding Natalie Arnold, whose header hit off the crossbar in another strong early chance.

Banks picked up another of her season-high eight shots in the 26th, forcing Cal State Fullerton keeper Isaac Ranson into a save as the Beach continued to push. Ultimately, in the first half, Long Beach State had nine shots and allowed just two, both of which were well wide of goal from Cal State Fullerton.

Play evened up slightly in the second half, though Long Beach State spent more time in front of goal. Banks had a shot in the 63rd minute from the corner of the box that forced Ranson into a save, but going back the other way, Kayalily Penn had a shot high in the 65th.

Lopez and Candelaria put two more shots on goal, and the Titans briefly thought they had the lead moments later, but a goal was waved off as Cal State Fullerton was offsides for the eighth and final time of the evening in the 75th.

Schuck made both of her saves after the 80th minute as the Titans continued to chase the game, but the critical moment came soon afterwards. With the Titans pushing forward on a counter, Ruby Mansour's attempt to clear for a corner hit off the post and in, a deflection that Schuck had no chance of stopping as the Titans took a 1-0 lead.

Refusing to give up after the own goal, Long Beach State created two of their best chances of the night in the final minutes. Earning a free kick just outside of the box, Ameera White's entry was caught by Ranson. Moments later, a misplay gave Banks one final opportunity, but the junior's shot was just wide while searching for the equalizer.

With the defeat, Long Beach State will close the season on Thursday night on the road at CSUN. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.
