
Men’s Water Polo Suffers Tough Loss To No. 15 Princeton At Home

A strong third quarter by the Tigers turned the game in their favor.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 10 Long Beach State went to halftime up by one goal but saw a powerful third quarter by No. 15 Princeton, who took control of the game and defeated the Beach 17-14 under the lights at a crowded LBCC Aquatics Complex.
Long Beach State (11-7, 1-0 Big West) quickly opened a 2-0 lead with Zalan Nagy and Gabi Acosta getting on the board before Princeton (16-7) scored their first of the day. Oliver Sudar extended the lead, but the Tigers tied the game 3-3. Acosta found the net once again, but Princeton kept the game close, tying it at four after the first.
The second quarter continued to see lots of action from both teams. Tied at six, Long Beach State scored back-to-back goals to open a two-goal lead after goals by Konstantinos Kapragkos and Acosta. With one minute left, the Tigers tied the game 8-8, but senior Jason O'Donnell got one past the Princeton defense to keep the Beach ahead 9-8 at half.
The Tigers pushed a 5-0 run to take control over the Beach in the third quarter, leading 13-9. After seven minutes without being able to find the back of the net, LBSU scored with ToringStanley, but Princeton answered right away. A late goal by Caleb Francisco kept the Beach within three with one quarter left.
Sandro Pueyo opened the last quarter, closing the gap for the Beach, but Adam Peocz continued to power the Tigers' offense with five goals on the day to keep the cushion as Long Beach trailed 15-12. With four minutes left, Princeton kept control of the game and closed with a win over the Beach, 17-14.
Long Beach State hits the road to face No. 7 UC San Diego Friday night for conference play. First sprint is scheduled for 6 p.m. live on ESPN+.
