Men’s Water Polo Stays Perfect In Conference Play With Road Win Against UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 10 Long Beach State pushed a 6-0 run in the second quarter, shutting down No. 7 UC San Diego for over nine minutes to take the lead and stay ahead for a 14-12 win on the road, their second Big West win of the season.
UCSD (16-7, 0-2 Big West) started strong, opening a quick 3-0 lead before the Beach (12-7, 2-0 Big West) scored one with Caleb Francisco. The Tritons responded with another of their own, but a late goal by Francisco again shortened the lead at the end of the first, 4-2.
After UC San Diego extended the lead early in the second, Long Beach State pushed a 6-0 run to take control of the game, leading 8-5 at halftime behind two more goals from Francisco, and Artur Diaz, Corbin Stanley, Oliver Sudar, and Jason O'Donnell adding one each in the period.
Konstantinos Kapragkos extended the lead for the Beach on a counterattack before UCSD found the back of the net after over eight scoreless minutes. Toring Stanley kept LBSU ahead, 10-6. The Tritons shortened the lead with back-to-back goals, but O'Donnell kept the cushion for the Beach at the end of the third, 11-8.
The fourth quarter saw a lot of action, with the Tritons scoring two quick goals to cut the margin to one. O'Donnell's hat trick turned it into a two-goal game once again, 12-10, with five minutes left. With under a minute left, Gabi Acosta got on the scoresheet to secure the Beach win over the Tritons, 14-12. Goalkeeper William Whitstone recorded nine saves as Francisco led the offense with four goals.
Long Beach State will return home for a pair of games, hosting No. 5 Fordham on October 21 and No. 10 Santa Barbara on October 25.
