
Men’s Water Polo Hosts No. 15 Princeton Thursday Night; Travels To No. 7 UCSD For Conference Play Friday

The match against the Tritons will be a rematch of the 2024 Big West Championship final.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 10 Long Beach State opens an important week facing No. 15 Princeton at the LBCC Aquatics Complex on Thursday and traveling to No. 7 UC San Diego for conference play in a Big West Championship rematch on Friday. Both matches will be played at 6 p.m.
The Beach (11-6, 1-0 Big West) played three road games this past week, defeating Cal State Fullerton in their conference opener, 20-9, and edging No. 13 Santa Clara, 15-14. In the last game of the weekend, LBSU struggled against No. 4 Stanford, losing 19-11. Against the Titans, Gabi Acosta and Zalan Nagy both recorded hat tricks to lead the offense.
Acosta continued to score in every single game so far this season, as the center added a pair against the Broncos, including the game-winner, and got one past the Cardinal defense on Sunday. The Barcelona native leads the team with 50 goals on the year, while Caleb Francisco has scored 31 so far. Brothers Corbin and Toring Stanley have combined for 48 goals to help power the Beach offense.
Princeton (14-7, 4-1 NWPC) is currently on a weeklong road trip in Southern California, playing a total of six games. Before facing Long Beach State, the Tigers dropped contests against No. 1 UCLA, No. 8 Pepperdine, and No. 3 USC. Princeton will play No. 16 UC Irvine on Wednesday night before the matchup against the Beach. The Tigers have a balanced offense with five players reaching the 30-goal mark this year. JP Ohl has a team-high 62 assists and recently broke the school record with over 220 assists. Goalkeeper Kristóf Kovács has recorded 177 saves to lead their defense while adding 14 assists, 14 steals, and a goal.
UC San Diego (16-6, 0-1 Big West) saw their seven-game win streak end on the road to open Big West play, as they dropped a close match to No. 10 UC Santa Barbara, 11-10. Bennett Axline recorded a hat trick to lead the Tritons' offense, and Alex Hageman made six saves in the match. Leading UCSD this season is Eamon Hennessey with 37 goals on the year, while Christian Hammonds has a team-high 29 assists. The Tritons and the Beach last faced each other in the 2024 Big West Championship final, where LBSU defeated UCSD, 10-8. The rematch is scheduled for 6 p.m. live on ESPN+ in La Jolla, Calif.
