
Late Goal By Gabi Acosta Gives The Beach A 15-14 Win On The Road Against Santa Clara

Ten different Long Beach State players scored on the win.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A big stop by goalkeeper Joe Jenness led to a game-winner by Gabi Acosta with 18 seconds left in the game as No. 10 Long Beach State defeated No. 13 Santa Clara, 15-14, to take the win on the road.
No. 13 Santa Clara (7-7, 1-0 WCC) opened the game with three quick goals to take control of No. 10 Long Beach State (11-5, 1-0 Big West) early in the first quarter. Sophomore Artur Diaz battled to score a no-look goal and put LBSU on the board. Sandro Pueyo added one to shorten the Broncos' lead to one, but the hosts scored from the outside to close the first eight minutes with the Beach trailing, 4-2.
A strong start by the Beach tied the game quickly with shots from Zalan Nagy and Caleb Francisco from the outside. The Broncos took the lead right away, but Long Beach State gained momentum, scoring twice more and taking their first lead of the game with goals from Corbin Stanley and Jason O'Donnell, 6-5. Santa Clara tied the game once again, and a counter by Gabi Acosta put LBSU ahead 7-6. SCU regained the lead after scoring two straight with 46 seconds left. A late goal by Nagy tied the game again for the Beach at the end of the second.
Long Beach State found a rhythm on defense early in the third, which led to Oliver Sudar being open on the counter to give the team another lead, 9-8. The Broncos tied the game once again before back-to-back goals from Toring Stanley and Pueyo opened a two-goal lead for the first time in the Beach's favor. Santa Clara cut the deficit once again before O'Donnell put LBSU up by two heading into the last quarter, 12-10.
The Broncos found the back of the cage first in the final period and cut the margin to one. Both teams traded goals as Francisco and Pueyo added another each to keep it a two-goal game. A late surge by Santa Clara tied the game at 14. With under 30 seconds left, goalkeeper Joe Jenness made a massive stop and assisted Acosta on the counter as the center gave the Beach a thrilling win over the Broncos, 15-14.
Pueyo led the Beach with a hat trick as nine other players added to the tally. Goalkeepers William Whitstone and Jenness split time in the cage, combining for 10 saves. Jenness added two assists on the day.
The Beach continues on the road as they will face No. 4 Stanford (8-4, 0-2 MPSF) on Sunday. First sprint is scheduled for noon, live on Overnght.com, with live stats available through 6-8scores.com.
