Long Beach State Picked To Finish Third In Big West Conference; Spanish Duo Named Preseason All-Big West

Martina Cardona and Elisa Portillo were selected to the Preseason All-Big West Coaches Team.
LONG BEACH, Calif – Long Beach State was picked to finish third in the Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll as announced by the league office. The 2025 Women's Water Polo season is scheduled to start next weekend as the Beach will host the Beach Invite for the third year in a row.
Long Beach State received four total first place votes, the most of any program, but ended behind UC Irvine (3 first place votes) and Hawai'i (1 first place vote) in total points. Following the Beach were UC San Diego in fourth, UC Davis in fifth, CSUN in sixth, UC Santa Barbara in seventh and Cal State Fullerton at the bottom of the poll.
Along with the preseason poll, the Big West also released its preseason All-Big West team, where two Long Beach State players were selected. Spanish duo, senior Martina Cardona and junior Elisa Portillo were recognized by the coaches in the preseason team.
Cardona was selected after earning Honorable Mentions in the past season where she scored 44 goals and added 24 assists in the 2024 season finishing as the team's third leading scorer. Portillo was selected to All-Big West Second Team after last season's effort where she was second in goals with 55 and added 30 assists.
The Beach will open their 2025 campaign at home as they host the Beach Invite on January 18. Long Beach will face Azusa Pacific at 10:30 a.m. and Concordia at 6 p.m. at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
