Beach Tennis Splits Opening Two Matches After Dropping 5-2 Decision At Oregon

Freshman Cecilia Costa was a three-set winner in the top flight in singles against the Ducks.
EUGENE, Ore. – Long Beach State won a pair of singles matches on the road against Oregon, but did not come away as the victor in their second match from Eugene as the Ducks held their home courts with a 5-2 win.
Long Beach State (1-1) defeated Seattle U 6-1 in a neutral match at the same venue on Saturday, and hoped to hand Oregon (4-0) their first defeat of the season. The Ducks were able to hold off Long Beach State though, taking a win despite three very tight singles matches on the day.
Oregon took the doubles point, as Daisy Carpenter and Paulina Franco fell 6-0 in the third flight, while Patsy Daughters and Karin Young clinched the point 6-2 over Cecilia Costa and Johanna Hiesmair at the ones. Diana De Simone and Thea Jagare were leading their match when the doubles point was clinched, leaving the match unfinished.
In singles, the Ducks clinched the match win with three victories, leaving the other three matches to be settled with 10-point tiebreakers. Thea Jagare was defeated by her older sister Tilde Jagare, playing for the Ducks in the fourth flight, while Karin Young defeated Diana De Simone and Patsy Daughters sealed the win with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daria Malaescu.
All three of the remaining matches reached a third set, with the Beach nearly winning all three. Cecila Costa won in the top flight, winning the first set on the way to a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 victory. Pamela Badillo was also a winner. The freshman dropped a tiebreaker in the first set but won the next two for a 6-7, 6-4, 10-7 win. Finally, Daisy Carpenter rallied with a second-set win but was edged in the tiebreaker by Avery Jennings, falling 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.
Long Beach State opens conference play next week, facing UC San Diego on the road in La Jolla on February 8 at 11 a.m.
