The Beach won the doubles point but lost on the road at UC San Diego.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – An early start to the Big West schedule didn't go the way of Long Beach State on Saturday, as the Beach won the doubles point but lost four of six singles matches as the home Tritons edged LBSU 4-3.
"A tough conference loss for us today," noted head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "This is a season of first experiences for this team so we are going to learn from this match and use it as motivation to get ready for our next opponents."
Long Beach State (1-2, 0-1 Big West) featured a lineup of solely freshmen in both singles and doubles, and got off to a quick start, grabbing the doubles point to open competition on Saturday. Diana De Simone and Thea Jagare fell 6-2 to Kelly Leung and Adriana Tabares, but Pamela Badillo and Daisy Carpenter evened things up with a 6-4 win over Grace Gamal and Katelyn Vu. Then in the top flight, Cecilia Costa and Johanna Hiesmair defeated Julia Haynes and Naomi Nguyen to take the point. Against UC San Diego (2-4, 1-0 Big West).
The Beach won the first two singles matches completed as well to come tantalizingly close to the victory. Jagare was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Tabares at the fours, and De Simone won 6-3, 6-0 against Gamal in the second flight.
UCSD's leader, graduate transfer Julia Haynes defeated Long Beach State's Costa in the top flight to give the Tritons their first point, and then wins from Lian over Badillo and Vu over Carpenter evened the match.
With the contest coming down to the third flight, it was a close battle but ultimately Leung defeated Malaescu 7-6 (6), 7-5 to clinch the match for UCSD.
Long Beach State will host their dual match home opener next on Saturday, February 15 against CSUN at Noon. The Beach will then host a non-conference matchup with San Diego State the day following on Sunday, also at Noon. Live scoring will be available for both matches.
