Long Beach State won 11 of 12 matches in total in the first of three days of action from the Rhodes Tennis Center.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State began the year in strong form, losing just one match in the first day of competition at home in the Beach Tennis Winter Invite.

"It was a very impressive start to our season, winning 11 of 12 matches today," said head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello following the first day. "We competed well and had a really strong court presence."

In the final tuneup before the dual match season begins, Long Beach State faced CSUN in doubles and Miami (OH) in singles to kick off the tournament. That started with a strong performance straight away, as the Beach swept their doubles competition with the Matadors.

Cecilia Costa partnered with Johanna Hiesmair, the freshman newcomer who joined the program this month but the duo had no issues, defeating Yuliia Zhytelna and Angela Ho 6-2 in Hiesmair's collegiate tennis debut. Diana De Simone and Daria Malaexcu were 6-4 winners over Santibanez/Shepperson of CSUN, as were They Jagare and Pamela Badillo who grabbed a 6-4 victory against Dermeniyan/Robertson. The closest match came for Paulina Franco Martinessi and Daisy Carpenter, but the pair showed their toughness in a 7-5 win over Emma Moratalla Sanz and Nicole West to complete the doubles sweep against the Matadors.

Cecilia Costa got the Beach off to a strong start with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sara Zalukar, while Diana De Simone was also a straight sets winner in the feature matches, 6-2, 6-3 against Nishitha Saravanan of Miami (OH). Daria Malescu also only lost five sets in a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sarah Dev, and Thea Jagare  was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Lauren Joyce.

The closest match of the day in singles for the Beach came from Hiesmair. In her singles debut, the Austrian battled through a close first set loss to win the second set, and outlasted Lovisa Valentinsson in a thrilling third set that went to an 8-6 tiebreak victory for the freshman newcomer. Pamela Badillo cruised in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 over Malu Olivera, while Daisy Carpenter had the day's only loss for LBSU, falling to Avery Voss. The wildest match of the day came from Paulina Franco Martinessi who was a 6-1, 0-6, 6-1 victor against Kylie Canubida of Portland as the Beach went 6-1 in singles play against the RedHawks.

Competition will resume tomorrow morning once again at 11 a.m. The Beach is scheduled to face Portland in doubles and CSUN in singles on Saturday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
