The junior’s 9-under 63 is tied for the third best round in program history.
MADISON, Wisc. – Junior Alejandro de Castro Piera rebounded from a middling first round with a monster second, tying for the third-best round in program history with a 9-under 63 at the Badger Invitational, leading Long Beach State into team championship contention entering Tuesday's final round.
Long Beach State as a whole attacked the course well on Monday at the Badger Invitational, held on Wisconsin's home course. The Beach had the day's best team score at 11-under par, as Clay Seeber also finished the day with a second-straight round under par at 70. Seeber and de Castro Piera are tied for fourth place at 5-under par.
"Just an incredible round from Alejandro today," said head coach Rob Murray. "I'm so proud of him and how he's developing. A bogey free -9 under is very impressive."
Charlie Forster used an eagle on 16 to pull back to an even par 72 to finish the day just outside of the top ten tied for 11th, while junior Jack Cantlay also fired an even par 72 as the team finished the day with a score of 277, tied for the seventh-best round in program history.
Jaden Huggins had the day's drop score of 77, while sophomore Tiger Tahvildari birdied his final hole to card a 74, and sits in a tie for 38th overall while playing as an individual in his first Division I tournament.
The hosts, Wisconsin, top the team leaderboard at 15-under par behind individual leader William Harned, while Long Beach State and Northern Illinois enter the final day tied for second two strokes back at 13-under.
"We're right where we want to be going into the final round," said Murray. "A cold front is supposed to move through and the wind is expected to pick up which will make the final round a grind, but we're excited for the opportunity."
