The Beach Conclude The Preseason With A 3-1 Win Over Pepperdine

Abby Karich led all scorers with 14 kills and three aces, while Natalie Glenn notched her fifth double-double of the year in Long Beach State’s victory over Pepperdine

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State turned in another efficient performance as the Beach downed Pepperdine, 3-1 [25-14, 8-25, 25-19, 25-16], on Saturday at the Walter Pyramid.

LBSU (6-4) was led by senior Abby Karich who posted 14 kills on the night, while hitting .312. She also eight kills, three blocks, and three aces.

Natalie Glenn recorded her fifth double-double of the season as she posted 10 kills and a team-leading 15 digs. She also put up two block assists as her solid defense helped limit Pepperdine (3-7) to a .139 attack percentage on the night.

Also anchoring the defensive efforts was libero Jenna Giambi as she collected nine digs in the backcourt. At the net, Kameron Bacon tallied five blocks, while Ella Lomigora and Jaida Harris added four each.

Senior setter Zayna Meyer ran a balanced offense that hit .208 as she dished out 31 assists, while contributing six digs, two kills, and two blocks.

Long Beach State broke an early 1-1 lead and led the rest of the first set. The Beach broke the game open on a 9-0 run which put them on top of Pepperdine, 16-6. The Waves strung together four-consecutive points to cut LBSU's lead down to five (17-12), but the Beach regrouped following a timeout and went back up by eight (21-13). Long Beach closed the set on a 4-0 run as the Beach claimed the opening set, 25-14.

Set two was all Pepperdine. The Waves opened the frame on a 4-0 run and never relinquished their lead. They led by as many as 13 (17-4) and went on to defeat the Beach, 25-8, to tie the match at 1-1.

The lopsided loss fired up the Beach as they came out in the third set ready to go. As a team, LBSU hit .306 in the frame and put a together several 3-0 runs to jump out in front 19-13 after back-to-back aces from Karich. Long Beach went on to secure the win, 25-19, as the Beach took a 2-1 set lead over the Waves.

Long Beach turned in its highest attack percentage (.367) in the fourth set, while holding Pepperdine to a mere .087 clip. The Beach took the lead early on and found themselves up, 15-11, at the media timeout. The Waves managed to cut LBSU's lead down to two (16-14), but the Beach extended their lead back up to eight (22-14) after scoring six-straight points. The Beach controlled the remainder of the game and cruised to a 25-16 victory.

Pepperdine was led by Grace Chillingworth and Birdie Hendrickson who each recorded 11 kills. Chillingworth was one dig shy of a double-double, while Hendrickson added seven digs. Setter Rosemary Archer registered 29 assists and seven digs, while libero Trinity Stanger logged 15 digs.

Long Beach State heads into Big West action on Thursday, Sept. 26 as they take on UC Davis at the Pavilion. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
