
Long Beach State Women’s Golf Opens Season With Team Win In New Mexico

Jasmine Leovao, Andee Avery both in top five as Long Beach State rises to the top for the win Tuesday.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In second place after two rounds, Long Beach State had a massive final day, shooting 8-under par as a team to pull away from the rest of the field on Tuesday and claim their first team championship of the year in their first opportunity, winning the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational hosted by New Mexico.
Long Beach State's 8-under par was eight strokes better than the next best team score of the day, as the Beach cruised past UNLV to capture their third team title in the last two years. For the tournament, Long Beach State was 1-under par, and finished six strokes in front of UNLV who came in second place.
Junior Jasmine Leovao opened the tournament with a 66, and was well under par again on Tuesday, finishing four-under par with a 68 and placing second overall in the 85-golfer field. Sophomore Andee Avery had the low score on the day for Long Beach State, a five-under 67 which helped her rise 10 sports on the leaderboard into a tie for fifth place overall on the day.
Janae Leovao was also under par on Tuesday, shooting a one-under 71 to finish in a tie for 15th overall while helping the Beach close out their spectacular day. Junior Madison Le was the final counting score for the day with a two-over 74, while Erin Lee shot a 76 to round out the lineup for the Beach. Graduate Hannah Jugar shot a 75 on Tuesday, and closed out her first Division I action in a tie for 48th while playing as an individual.
Long Beach State was in front of a number of Big West schools also in competition in Albuquerque. Cal State Fullerton finished in fourth place in the 15-team field, 13 strokes behind LBSU, while Cal Poly finished 8th and Hawai'i placed 15th.
Women's Golf will have a quick turnaround, taking part in the Leadership and Golf Invitational, hosted by Washington at Chambers Bay Golf Course on September 16 and 17.
