The Beach outshoot the Cougars 14-5
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Makayla Demelo's goal in the 73rd minute sent Long Beach State to a 1-1 tie against No. 4 BYU Saturday night at George Allen Field.
The Beach threatened in the 11th minute when Liz Worden capped off an offensive rush with a shot that went off the post. The BYU defense kicked the ball out of the end line, resulting in a corner kick for LBSU. Worden sent the ball into the box, where a scramble ensued. Summer Laskey would take a shot attempt that went high.
A Worden cross with 11 minutes remaining in the first half found Julia Moore running toward the net. In full stride, Moore's shot attempt went high to the left of the BYU (1-0-2) net. Kassandra Ceja threatened in the 38th minute. Her blast was saved by Cougars' goalie Lynette Hernaez. The rebound ended on Alanah Ramirez's feet. Ramirez's shot was high. Long Beach State outshot BYU 9-3 during the opening 45 minutes as the score remained 0-0.
Long Beach State maintained an advantage for the first portion of the second half. However, BYU (1-0-2) broke through in the 67th minute. Allie Fryer sent a crossing pass towards Caroline Stringfellow near the Long Beach State net. Beach goalie Aurora Schuck attempted to know the ball away. The ball ended up on the foot of Allie Gardiner, who scored from six yards out.
LBSU's tying goal came after the Beach mounted an offensive charge that saw Ceja dribble inside the 18, where she passed to Demelo. Demelo's attempt was on target, bouncing off Hernaez's hands and into the net.
Worden again threatened with an attempt from 25 yards that missed the lower portion of the Cougars' goal with five minutes remaining. Coming off a BYU yellow with 1:48 to play, Worden's free-kick was on target, but the Beach was called for off sides.
Long Beach State outshot BYU 14-5 in the match and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Hernaez made two saves. Schuck charted one save.
