The first of its kind for Women’s Water Polo, Genter is giving back to the program as a former student-athlete.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Alum and former Women's Water Polo student-athlete Bex Genter has contributed a significant gift which will allow Long Beach State Athletics to create the Gentner Family Women's Water Polo Endowed Scholarship.
Gentner played for the program from 2004 to 2009 and received her MBA in 2009. Joining a company managing a psychiatric hospital, Gentner has continued to find ways to give back, including hiring entry-level positions for former student-athletes in addition to her philanthropy for the program. She has since moved on to investing in both residential and commercial real estate, allowing Gentner more time to spend with her family, including four young children.
"When I was being recruited by Ricardo Azevedo, he told me 'If you need a scholarship, I'll give you one because you deserve one, but you also can choose to sacrifice for a better team,'" said Gentner. "That's my same motivation now; I want to give our team more recruiting power so we can continue to compete at the highest level in the nation."
The endowed scholarship will be awarded for the first time for this coming academic year, the 2024-25 season, as Long Beach State is coming off of a strong season that saw the team finish with its highest national ranking in 20 years at No. 6 in the NCAA.
"Our alumni have been an amazing support group for our program. Bex was a great player and contributed to this program while she was a student-athlete and her she and her family have continued to contribute to this program's growth and success," said Women's Water Polo Head Coach Shana Welch.
"Having the Gentner family continue to support the program through a scholarship endowment will help our program in so many wonderful ways. The importance of our alumni support is invaluable to the experience we can provide for the student-athletes on our women's water polo team. I want to thank Bex and her entire family for their ongoing generosity."
