Smith 8th; Briggs 10th In Olympic Trials Long Jump Finals

Smith makes the finals to lead a pair of former Beach jumpers

EUGENE, Ore.—Former Long Beach State athletes Jason Smith and Kemonie Briggs finished eighth and 10th respectively in the men's long jump finals at the 2024 United States Olympic Trials on Monday at historic Hayward Field.
Smith, who entered unattached, placed eighth. He qualified for the finals with a leap of 25-10 on his third try, but his performance did not improve over his final three attempts.
Briggs, competing for Leap Squad TC, was 10th in the field of 12. He fouled on his first two preliminary attempts before posting a 25-0 1/2 mark.
Jeremiah Davis of Florida State won the long jump after going 26-11. Florida's Malcolm Clemons and Puma's Jarrion Lawson went 26-10, with Clemons being awarded second.

Hailey Fune' is entered in the 100m hurdles this week. Fune' earned her spot into the field by tying the school record in the event, 13.21, in the opening round of the NCAA West First Round on May 22. Fune' will be representing Long Beach State during the trials competition.
The 100m hurdles begin with the first round on Friday, June 28 (5:28 p.m.). The semifinals are Saturday, June 29 (5:04 p.m.), with the finals set for Sunday, June 30 (5 p.m.). Coverage is available on NBC and Peacock.
A trio of Beach athletes will be attempting to qualify for the Paris Games for Canada at the Bell Track & Field Trials in Montreal, Quebec, from June 26-30.
Rori Denness-Lamont is ranked third on the Canadian list in the javelin, entering the June 27 event with her throw of 174-8, which won the 2024 Big West Championships. The qualifying is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. EDT before the 8:30 p.m. EDT finals.
Tayah DeSousa will attempt to qualify for Paris in two events, the long jump and 100m hurdles. DeSousa is ranked 10th in the long jump after posting a leap of 19-7. She is ranked 15th in the 100m hurdles with a quick time of 14.18.
Qualifying for the long jump begins on June 27 at 8:30 p.m. EDT, with the finals coming on Saturday, June 29 at 6 p.m. EDT. 100m hurdles qualifying starts on Friday, June 28 at 10:45 a.m. EDT. The semifinals are Saturday, June 29 at 6:25 p.m. EDT, while the finals are June 29 at 9:05 p.m. EDT. Both of her ranked performances occurred during the 2024 Big West Championships.
The Bell Track & Field Trials include national championships for Canada's National, U20 Para Athletics, and Combined Events. Aidan Turner enters the Olympic Trials in the men's long jump. Turner will also compete in the U20 Men's Pole Vault and the U20 Men's Long Jump. He has achieved automatic standards in each event while sending Turner automatically into the finals of each event.
Turner is ranked third in the Senior Long Jump and first in the U20 Long Jump (24-4 1/4). He is fourth in the U20 Pole Vault (15-3). The U20 events are set for Friday, June 28 (10 a.m. EDT/6:15 EDT). The Senior Long Jump finals will be held on Saturday, June 29, at 8 p.m. EDT.

Omri Shiff will attempt to qualify for Paris in the 400m hurdles at Israel's National Championships, conducted from June 26-27. Shiff earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 400m hurdles at the 2024 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships on June 5. The 2024 Big West Champion in the 400m hurdles, Shiff ran the fourth fastest time in school history, 50.55, on May 24 at the NCAA West Regional.
Sofia Lavreshina looks to qualify for Paris at Portugal's National Championships in the 400m and 400m hurdles from June 29-30. Lavreshina ran the fourth quickest 400m time in school history, 54.25, during the preliminaries of the Big West Championships. She lowered her seventh fastest 400m hurdles time to 58.97 at the NCAA West Region First Round.
