The Individual Champion of the Big West, Jasmine Leovao was the top finisher from a non-qualifying team to secure her spot in the NCAA Championship.
CLE ELUM, Wash. --- Sophomore Jasmine Leovao finished in the Top 10 at the Cle Elum Regional, and has earned a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championship to be held in Carlsbad, Calif., from May 17-20.
Â
Finishing the tournament in eighth place overall, Leovao closed out the tournament at 2-over par, shooting a final round 74 following back-to-back rounds of 72 on Monday and Tuesday. Team champions Stanford had four of the top five finishers, including the individual medalist Rachel Heck. Emma McMyler and Andie Smith of second-place Duke finished in sixth and seventh respectively, one spot in front of Leovao who was the top finisher from a non-advancing team to qualify for the NCAA Championship as an individual.
Â
After placing in the Top 5 in each of the first two days, sharing fifth place Tuesday with San Jose State, the Spartans pulled away on Wednesday to claim the final team spot along with Stanford, Duke, Virginia and Arizona State.
Â
Leovao is the second women's golfer from Long Beach State to ever advance to the NCAA Championship. Long Beach State Hall of Famer Kay Hoey was the only other to do so, qualifying twice as an individual in 2005 and 2007.
Â
Long Beach State entered the tournament as the ten seed and finished in eighth place overall for the tournament, placing in front of Virginia Tech, Alabama, Sacramento State and Seattle and just three strokes behind tournament hosts Washington.
Â
Sophomore Madison Le had the team's second-best score on Wednesday with a 78, while Janae Leovao finished the tournament with a 79 and Andee Avery closed the tournament with an 80 in the team's last counting score on the final day.
Â
Jasmine Leovao will join the 30 qualifying teams and five other individuals to reach the 72-hole final stroke play championship. That tournament will be held at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. over four days from May 17-20.
