Eli Villalobos was called up by the Miami Marlins on May 5
LONG BEACH, Calif.— Eli Villalobos became the 57th former Long Beach State baseball player in the Major Leagues when he appeared for the Miami Marlins against the Oakland A's on May 5. He pitched one inning, striking out Abraham Toro to end the game.
Villalobos joined the Dirtbags in 2017 after beginning his collegiate career as a catcher at Golden West College. In two seasons pitching for Long Beach State, Villalobos appeared in 52 games, including a team-high 28 during the 2018 campaign. He went 4-4 with four saves in 71 innings pitched for the Dirtbags, and opponents only batted .214 against him during his LBSU career.
The Marlins selected him in the 14th round of the 2018 MLB draft. In 2024, he worked his way up to Triple-A Jacksonville, where he pitched 13.1 innings during nine appearances. Villalobos was brought up to the major league roster after another former Dirtbags pitcher, Darren McCaughan, was designated for assignment after pitching for Miami on May 4 against the A's.
He is the third former Dirtbags player to debut in the majors this season. David Bañuelos debuted for the Baltimore Orioles on Apr. 16 after Nick Avila became a member of the San Francisco Giants on Apr. 2.
