Forster’s fourth place finish at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional matched a program record finish in the postseason.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Junior Charlie Forster shot a 5-under par 65 to finish off the Chapel Hill Regional in fourth-place overall, leading a strong finish to the season for Long Beach State as a team in the highest NCAA Regional placement in school history.
Forster went into the clubhouse after Wednesday's third and final round in the individual qualifying position for the NCAA Championships after a second 65 from North Carolina, but Nick Matthews of NC State hit two birdies in the final three holes to leapfrog the junior and take the individual qualifying position with a second-place finish at 12-under par, one stroke in front of Forster's 11-under par total for the tournament.
"Charlie played great all week and for him to gain this experience will only help him out in the future," noted head coach Rob Murray.
Clay Seeber and Jack Cantlay were also both under par on the day on the way to a Top 25 finish at the tournament. Seeber was one-under in a consistent day on the course to finish 5-under par for the tournament in a tie for 16th place. Birdies on 17 and 18 for Cantlay helped the sophomore maintain a tie for 21st overall, 2-under par for the tournament.
Alejandro De Castro was Long Beach State's other counting score on the day with a 73, earning a scoring spot on both days after coming in as a substitute for Long Beach State prior to the second round of play on Monday.
Long Beach State as a team was 3-under on Wednesday as the team completed the third round, but ended up just two strokes behind Baylor for the fifth and final team qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships after 54 holes.
"I'm super proud of the team and the way that they competed both this week and all season," said Murray. "We played well today too, but at this level the margins are really small."
Forster's fourth place finish was tied with Phillip Chian from 2012 for the highest individual finish in an NCAA event for Long Beach State. Chian placed fourth in the 2012 NCAA Regionals and moved onto the NCAA Championship as an individual, the last individual appearance for LBSU in the finals. 2012 also marked the highest finish as a team, an 8th place finish bested Wednesday by the 2024 team's 7th place finish.
