Cal State Fullerton Wins Opener In Decisive Series 4-1

5/10/2024 8:41:00 PM | Softball

Long Beach State will need to win two Saturday to take the Big West as the title comes down to the Beach and the Titans for the fourth straight year.

FULLERTON, Calif. – A three-run bottom of the third inning was the difference between the top two teams in the Big West, as Cal State Fullerton took the first of three games between the title contenders 4-1 Friday night.

Cal State Fullerton (35-16, 21-4 Big West) opened the scoring in the first inning. Long Beach State (24-28, 19-6 Big West) picked up a key out as Rebekah Durazo threw out Bailey Wallace stealing. The Titans next swing would be a solo home run from Kika Ramirez, but the extra out kept the lead at 1-0.

In the third inning, the Titans added to their lead. Singles from Jessi Alcala and Megan Delgadillo put two on, and then a Wallace single made the score 2-0. A shallow single to center by Becerra then scored two more after an obstruction call at the plate as Cal State Fullerton took a 4-0 lead.

Pinch hitter Cassie Camou singled to start a rally for Long Beach State in the fifth inning. Jacquelyn Bickar and Sara Olson worked a pair of walks to load the bases in front of the heart of the order for the Beach. Makayla Medellin dropped in a single to score one and keep the bases loaded with one out, but Titan reliever Staci Chambers was able to get out of the inning with a popup and a nice play at the hot corner from Hannah Becerra to retire Jocylyn Vidal and end the inning.

Staci Chambers finished off the game in relief, while Haley Rainey bested Sophia Fernandez who went the distance for Long Beach State in the circle, striking out three.

Long Beach State will now need to win both games of Saturday's doubleheader to win the championship, while a win for Cal State Fullerton in either will give the Titans the title. Both games will be on ESPN+, with first pitch in game one scheduled for 2 p.m.
