Softball Rolls Over The Tritons To Start Series At UC San Diego

4/5/2024 4:23:00 PM | Softball

Long Beach State had 12 runs on 12 hits and batted around in the fourth inning.

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State had one of the their most productive days offensively of the season, putting up 12 runs in the first four innings on the way to a run-rule victory Friday to start their series at UC San Diego.

Senior Jocylyn Vidal gave Long Beach State (13-23, 8-2 Big West) the first lead of the contest in the top of the second inning, crushing a solo home run to left center in her first homer of the year to put LBSU in front 1-0.

A massive third inning for LBSU opened up the game despite a wacky play in the middle. Jacquelyn Bickar and Sara Olson started the inning with two straight hits, but were both thrown out on a double steal as Bickar slipped. The momentum at the plate continued though, as Makayla Medllin and Rebekah Durazo doubled to bring home one run. Sinclair Lawhorn then hit Long Beach State's second home run of the game to make the score 4-0 after the top of the third.

Long Beach State kept the pressure on in the fourth inning. Corissa Sweet started the inning with a single, the first of seven straight batters for the Beach who would reach in the inning. With the bases loaded, Bickar hit an RBI single to keep the bases loaded, and Olson walked to plate another run with no outs and the bases loaded.

Up 7-0, a two-run single by Rebekah Durazo scored two more and then an RBI groundout from Lawhorn added one more to make it 10-0 with just the first out. A Vidal double scored Durazo to keep the action going, and Sweet's second hit of the frame, an RBI single made the score 12-0 in favor of the Beach.

Sophia Fernandez threw four scoreless innings, striking out three in her eighth win of the season, while Kate Barnett finished off the game against UC San Diego (12-21, 5-4 Big West) to combine for the shutout in the 12-0 win over five innings.

The teams are slated to play a pair of games on Saturday, with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
