Sophia Fernandez Claims Second Big West Pitcher Of The Week

Fernandez went 2-0 with 10 strikeouts in a pair of complete games against Hawai’i.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Senior pitcher Sophia Fernandez was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season following a pair of complete game victories as Long Beach State won their seventh consecutive league series this season.
Fernandez opened the series with a six strikeout performance against Hawai'i, holding the Rainbow Wahine to a single run in a tight 2-1 victory. In a second pitcher's duel with Addison Kostrencich to close the series, Fernandez struck out four with no walks and again allowing just one run in a complete game 3-1 victory.
The two wins lowered Fernandez' Big West ERA to 1.28 over 93 innings pitched, as the senior is now 9-3 in league play with 11 complete games in 14 starts. Fernandez previously won Big West Pitcher of the Week following the UC Davis series after another 2-0 week with a pair of victories, posting an 0.39 ERA.
Long Beach State closes out their home schedule this Friday and Saturday, hosting Cal State Bakersfield. The series begins with a doubleheader Friday on ESPN+ and concludes Saturday afternoon. The Beach will recognize their nine seniors, including Fernandez, following the conclusion of Saturday's final home game.
