Long Beach State Rolls Past Cal Poly 8-1 To Secure Series Win

4/21/2024 4:01:00 PM | Softball

Long Beach State has won all six of their Big West conference series.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior Rebekah Durazo went 4-for-4, a triple shy of the cycle with four RBI as Long Beach State had their clearest win of the series, an 8-1 victory over the Mustangs to close out a series win on the road at Cal Poly.

The four RBI from one player matched the season high for Long Beach State (19-25, 14-4 Big West) who jumped out to an early lead over Cal Poly (22-14, 12-5 Big West) and never looked back on Sunday.

Sara Olson drew a leadoff walk, and after a single from Makayla Medellin, a walk to Sinclair Lawhorn loaded the bases in the top of the first inning for the Beach. A spectacular diving catch from Juju Sargent in right field turned a double into a sacrifice fly from Jocylyn Vidal, and Cal Poly appeared to once again limit the damage from a promising inning similar to plenty of chances on Saturday.

Durazo had different ideas for Sunday, smashing a two-run double into the gap to give the Beach a 3-0 lead before the Mustangs came to bat. A Xiara Diaz triple helped Cal Poly cut into the lead in the first inning, and through two the Beach led 3-1.

The Beach continued to do a good job of cashing in opportunities the rest of the way from San Luis Obispo, consistently increasing the lead through the rest of the game. In the third, with a runner on, Durazo smashed a two-run home run to left field to make the score 5-1. In the fourth, Carly Robbins started the inning off with a single and the Beach pushed the junior across. Durzao started the fifth with a single, and then pinch runner KaLeena Gonzales scored from first on an RBI double from Carly Robbins to increase the lead to 7-1.

Finally, the Beach used a leadoff walk in the seventh add one additional insurance run and ease their way into the 8-1 victory and grab a crucial road series win against the third-place team in the standings.

Sophia Fernandez finished off her ninth complete game of conference play on the way to her 10th win of the season, scattering seven hits over 7.0 innings with a critical strikeout that ended the fourth inning.

Long Beach State will have an extended homestand, playing their next seven at the LBSU Softball Complex to close out their home slate. The Beach will host No. 12 UCLA on Tuesday night, April 23, before a pair of home conference series against Hawai'i and Cal State Bakersfield.
