Long Beach State Shuts Down UC Irvine, 7-0, In The Black & Blue Rivalry Match On Senior Day

Each Beach senior earned a win in their final home match at Rhodes Tennis Center
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State turned in a dominant performance on Friday afternoon at Rhodes Tennis Center as the Beach rolled to a 7-0 victory over Big West foe UC Irvine in the Black and Blue Rivalry match. Making the win even more special, was that it came on Senior Day. Prior to the match, LBSU recognized its four seniors in Rhona Cook, Justine Dondonay, Sarah Medik, and Mathilde Tranberg on their final home match of their collegiate careers.
"Very strong performance from the entire team today to finish our regular season," Long Beach State Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said.
The Beach (12-7, 6-3 Big West) won the doubles point over the Anteaters (5-14, 1-7 Big West) with two quick victories at flights one and two. At the top flight, Cook and Peppi Ramstedt took down Emily Fowler and Kayla Meraz, 6-1, before Dondonay and Doga Akyurek claimed a 6-2 victory over Asha Gidwani and Carolyna Fowler at No. 2 doubles.
Leading 1-0, the Beach carried that momentum into singles competition and won each singles contest in two sets to cruise to a 7-0 win.
Akyurek picked up the first win for Long Beach at flight five as she rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Larissa Teramura to put LBSU up 2-0.
The Beach added to their lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles as Ramstedt downed Carolyna Fowler.
Dondonay clinched the match for Long Beach State with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at flight two. Dondonay's win came over UCI's Gidwani as the Beach secured the match with a 4-0 win.
Long Beach State continued to add to their score as Medik defeated Amanda Perez, 6-3, 6-0 at flight four, while Cook took down Jenna Schlatter at the top flight, 6-3, 6-3.
Completing the sweep for the Beach was Tranberg who put away the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles as she defeated the Anteaters' Haily Huynh.
Long Beach State will be in action next at The Big West Championships which run from April 24-28 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
The Beach current sit in fourth place in The Big West standings, but will await their final seeding following Sunday's conference matches.
