Senior Rhona Cook accounted for two of Long Beach State’s points in the setback at The Big West Quarterfinals

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State's season came to a close on Thursday in The Big West Quarterfinals as the Beach came up just short in a competitive, 4-3, setback to Cal Poly.

The No. 4 seed Beach finished the season with a 12-8 overall record, while the No. 5 seed Mustangs improve to 11-8-1 on the year as they advance to the semifinals and face top-seeded UC Santa Barbara on Friday, April 26 at noon.

Following a rain delay, the Beach started the day off strong. Senior Rhona Cook and junior Peppi Ramstedt earned a 6-1 victory at the top doubles flight. The pair defeated Cal Poly's Dunkle sisters, Delanie and Peyton. However, the third flight went to Cal Poly as Kennedy Buntrock and Eliza Bates held off Paulina Franco Martinessi and Mathilde Tranberg, 6-4.

A battle ensued at flight two where Doga Akyurek and Justine Dondonay were in a back-and-forth exchange with Melissa LaMette and Romane Mosse. Long Beach State's duo fought hard and came away with a 7-5 win to give the Beach the doubles point.

Long Beach State went up 2-0 on Cal Poly as Cook earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Delanie Dunkle at the top singles flight.
Over at court three, Alexandra Ozerets edge Ramstedt, 6-2, 6-4, before Peyton Dunkle defeated Dondonay at flight two, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to tie the match at 2-2.

Senior Sarah Medik gutted out a tough three-setter at flight four as the Beach regained the lead, 3-2. Medik faced Cal Poly's Mosse who took the first set, 6-3. However, Medik rallied to win the set and third sets, 6-1, 6-2, to earn the point for LBSU.

Cal Poly evened the score once again, 3-3, as Buntrock won the challenging three-setter at flight six. Long Beach's Tranberg won the first set, 6-1, but dropped the next two sets 6-3, 6-1.

The match came down to court five where Akyurek and LaMette were in a tight contest. Akyurek had won the first set, 6-4, and LaMette had claimed the second set, 6-3. The third set was tight, but LaMette squeaked out a 6-3 win over Akyurek to clinch the match for the Mustangs.
