Bañuelos is the second former LBSU player to make a major league debut this season

LONG BEACH, Calif.— David Bañuelos became the 56th former Long Beach State baseball player to play in the Major Leagues when Bañuelos debuted for the Baltimore Orioles on Apr. 16, pinch-hitting for Colton Cowser in the eighth inning.

Bañuelos led the Dirtbags to the 2017 Big West Conference title and an NCAA Division I Super Regionals appearance. He was named to three All-American teams, including first-team Baseball America honors in 2017. A 2017 Johnny Bench Award finalist, Bañuelos was named to the 2017 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove team and was chosen 2017 Big West Defensive Player of the Year.

A two-time first-team All-Conference selection, Bañuelos earned first-team ABCA All-Region honors in 2017. The Seattle Mariners selected him in the fifth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft. Bañuelos was traded by the Mariners in the 2017 offseason to the Minnesota Twins, reaching the Triple-A level in the organization by 2022.

After spending the 2023 season with the Twins organization, Bañuelos signed as a free agent with the Orioles during the offseason. On Apr. 16, he was moved to Baltimore's 40-man roster before his call-up.

He is the second former Dirtbags player to debut in the bigs this season. Nick Avila became a member of the San Francisco Giants on Apr. 2.
