The Beach has won all five of their Big West series so far.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The top of the order had big days and senior Cassie Camou hit her first home run of the season as Long Beach State closed out a series sweep of UC Santa Barbara with a 7-2 win on Saturday morning.
Sara Olson, Makayla Medellin and Rebekah Durazo all had multiple hits on the day for Long Beach State (17-24, 12-3 Big West) while Cassie Camou had a pair of RBI, going 1-for-2 with two walks.
The Beach got off to a quick start, taking the lead in the first inning. Sara Olson led things off with a single, and hits from Medellin and Durazo loaded the bases before a wild pitch scored the senior for a 1-0 lead.
Camou opened more scoring in the second inning with a solo home run to center field, and then an RBI single from Medellin scored Olson once more as the Beach took a 3-0 lead. Opening the score even more in the third, Jocylyn Vidal doubled to open the third, and then with the bases loaded, Camou drew a walk to score a run and keep the bases loaded with no outs. Another walk, this time to Olson, and an RBI groundout plated two more as the Beach took a 6-0 lead.
Starter Sophia Fernandez ran into some trouble in the fourth as UC Santa Barbara (13-23, 7-8 Big West) pushed to rally. Back-to-back singles followed by a two-run double from Alexa Sams scored two runs and led to the early end of the outing from Fernandez, but Mo Quinlan came in and picked up three straight outs to close out the fourth.
Quinlan would finish off the game with a four-inning relief outing to grab her second win of the series, striking out a pair. The Beach would add one additional insurance run, an unearned run coming across on an RBI single from Durazo in the fifth.
Long Beach State will face a critical conference series on the road next week, taking on Cal Poly on the road in a matchup between two of the top three teams in the standings. The series is scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday prior to a final game on Sunday, April 21.
