Rhona Cook and Sarah Medik pick up a pair of wins at singles in the 5-2 setback on the road
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Long Beach State dropped a tough 5-2 decision on Friday to CSUN at the Matador Tennis Complex.
For the first time in two months, the Beach (11-7, 5-3 Big West) dropped back-to-back contests. LBSU has now won five of its last seven matches over the last four weeks. Meanwhile, the Matadors' (11-5, 5-1 Big West) win snapped a three-match losing skid and helped them improve to 7-2 at home.
Doubles competition was tough. At flight three, Mathilde Tranberg and Paulina Franco Martinessi dropped a 6-1 contest to Angela Ho and Elena Goodman. However, Justine Dondonay and Doga Akyurek earned a hard-fought 6-4 win over Victoria Santibanez Luna and Cindy Ung at No. 2 doubles.
The doubles point all came down to the top singles flight where Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt were embattled in a back-and-forth affair with Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna. The Beach duo fought hard, but came up just short as CSUN squeaked out the 7-5 win to claim the doubles point.
After dropping a 6-2, 6-2 showing at No. 5 singles, Long Beach State found itself trailing CSUN 2-0. However, Cook turned in a solid performance at the top singles flight to get the Beach on the board. Cook did an excellent job battling Turchak and coming away with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
At flight three, Ramstedt went head-to-head with Santibanez Luna and dropped a tough 6-3, 6-4, decision as the Matadors took a 3-1 advantage over the Beach.
Sarah Medik faced Emma Moratalla Sanz at No. 4 singles and kept the Beach in the game as she earned a gritty 7-5, 6-4 victory. With the win, Long Beach State made it a 3-2 contest.
However, that was as close as the Beach would get. Dondonay and Zhytelna went back-and-forth in a thrilling three-setter that would turn out to be the match clincher for the Matadors. Zhytelna took the first set 6-3, before Dondonay gutted out a 7-6 (6) set two victory to force a third set. In the final set, the two exchanged points in a nail-biter that eventually saw Zhytelna defeat Dondonay, 6-3, and give the Matadors the win.
At court six, Tranberg and Goodman were in their own three-set battle. Tranberg claimed the first set 6-3, however, Goodman came back to claim the next two 6-4, 7-5 to edge out Tranberg and give CSUN a 5-2 victory.
Long Beach State will close out the regular season on Friday, April 19 against UC Irvine. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at Rhodes Tennis Center. Live scoring will be available via BeachLiveStats.com.
