LBSU Takes 3-of-4 Big West Track & Field Honors

Freschlin Wins On The Men's Side; Fune' and Denness-Lamont Take Women's Honors

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State took three of the four Big West Track and Field weekly honors the league announced on Mar. 5.

Nikolaj Freschlin was selected as Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Freschlin won the javelin at the Beach Opener on Mar. 1 with a toss of 219-9. The mark is the sixth longest in school history, and as of Mar. 4, the mark was second in Division I and the top throw in the West Region.

Hailey Fune' earned Big West Track Athlete of the Week honors. Fune' finished second in the 100m hurdles at the Beach Opener at 13.77. Her time is currently the fourth fastest in Division I and is fourth in the West Region. She also competed in three other events at the Beach Opener (high jump, javelin, and shot put). 

Rori Denness-Lamont rounds out the honors as she was chosen Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week. She won at the Beach Opener by resetting the school record in the javelin with a toss of 172-7. She broke Randi Hicks' previous school record of 170-11 (2010). Denness-Lamont's performance is currently ranked first in Division I in javelin.

The Beach will return to action on March 15 at the Challenge Cup, which Cal State Fullerton will host.
