The senior allowed one earned run over 18.0 innings pitched in two complete games as the Beach went 4-0.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Senior Sophia Fernandez was honored for her outstanding week in the circle, chosen as the Big West Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 25.

Fernandez played a key role in Long Beach State's undefeated 4-0 record at home last week, as the Beach defeated California Baptist in non-conference action before a sweep of UC Davis in Big West play.

Fernandez made two starts and tossed a complete game in both of them going 2-0 with a 0.39 ERA last week. In the opening game of the UC Davis series, Fernandez allowed one run while pitching all 11 innings of an extra-inning affair before the Beach walked off the Aggies in the bottom of the 11th, 2-1. Fernandez tied a career high of seven strikeouts and pitched 10 scoreless innings after a sole run in the first to grab the win.

The senior then pitched another complete game in the finale with the Aggies, giving up one unearned run and scattering five hits as the Beach defeat UC Davis 4-1.

Fernandez is the second weekly award winner this season for Long Beach State, joining true freshman Malayna Terrones who was selected as the Big West Freshman of the Week after a two-homer week earlier this season.

Long Beach State continues Big West action this weekend, hosting CSUN for a three game series at the LBSU Softball Complex. The Beach will host a doubleheader Friday evening under the lights before another night game, televised nationally on Saturday night on ESPNU at 7 p.m.
