Long Beach picked up a win against CSUN and a loss against No. 12 Hawaii on Saturday, the second of three days at the Big West Challenge.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — No. 7 Long Beach State swept CSUN to start out the day but lost a tight match against No. 12 Hawaii.
Beach Volleyball started the second day of the Big West Challenge with their second sweep of CSUN (11-10) this season. The fourth and second flight duos both had a slow start to their games. Christine Deroos and Megan Widener were quickly able to figure out how to handle their opponent and earn the Beach their first dual point. The second flight pair of Savannah Standage and Julia Westby came back from being down in both sets and took their game in straight sets. The fifth flight pair of Kate Stoughton and Emily Sparks breezed through their first set but lost a tight battle in the second set. Their third set saw them gain momentum and take the set 15-4 to complete the third sweep in a row for the team.
After a two-hour lightning delay the Beach (17-3) returned to the sand to take on Hawaii (13-8). The fourth flight pair of Christine Deroos and Megan Widener battled hard through two sets but couldn't come up with a win. Savannah Standage and Julia Westby had a tough first set but came back to win a gritty second set. The third set was as breeze for the sophomore duo as they maintained control of the set to win Long Beach a point in the dual. The fifth flight pair of Livi Narancich and Haley Carrington dropped their first set but battled back in their second set. They came from behind to tie the set at 15-15, but couldn't come up with the win. Mo Gibson and Natalie Glenn had a back and forth first set, but once they found their footing they couldn't be stopped as they won their game and tied the dual for Long Beach. The first flight pair of Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah lost their first set but came back for a dominant performance in their second set. The third set went to Hawaii as they won 17-15.
The Beach will finish the Big West Challenge at UC Davis, taking on Cal Poly at 9 a.m. and the host Aggies at 11 a.m.
