The Beach took both matches on the first day of the LBSU Tournament.
LONG BEACH, Calif. — No. 7 Long Beach State swept Texas and won a close match against No. 11 Arizona State.
Long Beach State (12-2) started the day with a sweep of the Longhorns (0-2). The duo of Haley Carrington and Livi Narancich breezed through their game with witty plays that held their opponent to only nine points in the second set. The first flight pair also got into a groove to take the first set. Their opponents were able to push back in the second set but ultimately lost to give the Beach their second dual point. Julia Westby and Savannah Standage had complete control of their game to win the dual for Long Beach. Christine Deroos and Megan Widener were tested early in the first set. After dropping the set, they came back and played a dominant game over their opponents to complete the sweep.
The Beach were challenged by Arizona State (10-4) early on all courts. The second flight of Savannah Standage and Julia Westby couldn't find their footing against their opponents as Arizona State took the first dual point. The fourth flight powerhouses of Christine Deroos and Megan Widener answered back quickly by winning their match to tie the dual at 1-1. The third flight duo also powered through and took their second set to 23-21 to secure their win in straight sets. The fifth flight battled in two close sets but ultimately could not come up with a win as the dual once again was tied. The first flight would be the deciding court as Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah fought back after a disappointing second set. The third set was back and forth until the Beach gained momentum at the ten point mark. There was no stopping the dynamic duo as they went on to take the third set 15-10, securing the win for the Beach.
The Beach will finish the LBSU Tournament tomorrow as they take on Nebraska at 10 a.m. and play their first conference opponent, CSUN, at 1 p.m.
