No. 4 Seed Long Beach State Defeats No. 5 Seed UC San Diego In The Big West Championship First Round

Natalie Glenn leads the Beach with 19 kills, while Abby Karich and Madi Maxwell record double-doubles in Long Beach State’s First Round victory
IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 4 seed Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team earned a 3-1 [25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23] victory over No. 5 seed UC San Diego in the First Round of The Big West Championship at the Bren Events Center on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Beach (19-10) advance to The Big West Championship Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 29 where they will face top-seeded Cal Poly at 3 p.m. at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif.
The Tritons end their season with a 17-13 overall record.
Senior outside hitter Natalie Glenn led the way for the Beach offense with 19 kills on a .485 hitting percentage. She added seven digs, three blocks, and one assist in an all-around solid performance.
Joining Glenn in double-figures were senior outside hitter Abby Karich and freshman opposite Madi Maxwell. The pair recorded double-doubles with Karich concluding the match with 15 kills and 12 digs, while Maxwell posted 10 kills and 11 digs.
Maxwell also put up five blocks, while sophomore middle blocker Ella Lomigora posted a team-leading seven blocks. Lomigora also chipped in six kills on a .333 (6-2-12) clip.
Setters Zayna Meyer and Maura Hayes paced the Beach with 31 and 18 assists, respectively.
In the back court, senior Jenna Giambi logged 12 digs to help keep the Tritons off balance as UCSD hit .181 in the contest.
Long Beach State got off to a hot start opening the match with three-straight points. The Beach hit .314 in the first set and never trailed as they kept the Tritons at bay throughout the frame. LBSU held a 19-15 lead over UCSD, when Madi Collins came in to serve and highlighted a 5-0 scoring run with back-to-back aces which gave Long Beach a 23-15 advantage. From there, the Beach put the first set away, 25-17.
UC San Diego took an early lead in the second set as the Beach called a timeout trailing 9-4. LBSU managed to make it a two-point game on a kill from Glenn (11-9), before taking the lead (14-13) on a block by Maxwell and Bacon. The Beach's lead was short-lived as UCSD went back up by three (18-15) forcing Long Beach to utilize its final timeout. Karich knocked down back-to-back kills as the Beach cut the Tritons' lead down to one (21-20), but that was as close as they'd get before UC San Diego took the second set, 25-23.
The third set was a battle throughout. After going back-and-forth early in the game, Long Beach State scored four-straight to take a 12-10 lead. However, the Tritons would come back and even the score at 16-all. The Beach used another 4-0 run to take a 20-16 advantage over UCSD, however, the Tritons used a pair of 3-0 runs to regain their lead (22-21). The Beach got a powerful kill from Glenn that tied the game at 23-23 and kicked off a 3-0 run to end the game as LBSU won 25-23.
The Beach tallied four-straight points early in the fourth set to take a 5-3 edge over the Tritons. Despite LBSU leading the remainder of the set, UC San Diego did not go quietly. The Tritons threatened on numerous occasions and finally evened the score at 23-all forcing the Beach to take a timeout. Following the break in action, Long Beach State came back and won the set and match on a block by Maxwell and Bacon, 25-23.
Kylie Pries of UCSD led all scorers with 20 kills, while adding nine digs. Molly McCluskey finished with a double-double as she registered 14 kills and 14 digs. Ava McInnes rounded out the Tritons' double-figure scorers with 10 kills to go along with three blocks. Setter Audrey Hollis wrapped up the match with a 45-assist showing, while adding five digs. Libero Paulina Baillie anchored the backrow with 18 digs.
