No. 4 Long Beach State Falls In Straight Sets To Top-Seeded Cal Poly In The Big West Semifinals

IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 4 seed Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team battled, but came up short in a 3-0 [22-25, 20-25, 20-25] sweep to top-seeded Cal Poly on Friday in The Big West Semifinals.
The closely contested match saw Long Beach State (19-11) and Cal Poly (22-8) fight each other through 17 ties and eight lead changes, before the Mustangs came away with the win to advance to The Big West Championship match on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 5 p.m.
The Beach were led by senior outside hitter Natalie Glenn who recorded a team-best 13 kills on a .310 hitting percentage. Glenn also added two digs, one block, and one assist.
Pacing the LBSU offense to a .207 clip, senior setter Zayna Meyer concluded the game with a double-double as she tallied 14 assists and 11 digs. Meyer split time at setter with senior Maura Hayes who dished out 12 assists.
Defensively, senior libero Jenna Giambi anchored the backcourt with seven digs, while sophomore Ella Lomigora put up seven blocks.
The opening set was a battle from start to finish. Neither team led by more than three points through the set. Cal Poly held a 15-14 lead at the media timeout and extended its lead to two (18-16) which prompted a Long Beach State timeout. The Beach brought in Savana Chacon to serve and she led LBSU on a 4-0 run highlighted by an ace as Long Beach took a two-point lead (21-19). However, the Mustangs would come back and close the set on a 6-1 run to win, 25-22.
Cal Poly controlled much of the second set. The Mustangs used a 4-0 run to jump out in front of the Beach 14-8. Another four-consecutive points by Cal Poly opened up a 10-point (21-11) advantage for the top seed. However, Long Beach State refused to quit. Trailing 23-14, the Beach got a kill from Grace O'Reilly which kicked off a 6-1 LBSU run that cut Cal Poly's lead down to four (24-20). The Mustangs managed to knock down one more kill to win the set, 25-20, and cut Long Beach's rally short.

But the Beach's lead would be short-lived as the Mustangs used a 4-0 run of their own to even the score at 10-10. Following two LBSU timeouts, the Mustangs scored four-consecutive points to take a 20-15 advantage over the Beach. From there, Cal Poly took the set, 25-20, to complete the sweep.
Tommi Stockham led all scorers with 17 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. She just missed a double-double as she finished with nine digs, while adding two aces. Breklyn Pulling added 11 kills on a .375 clip, while setter Samantha Callahan distributed 40 assists. Callahan was also just one dig shy of a double-double. Libero Elif Hurriyet concluded the match with 13 digs.
