Aurora Schuck made five saves for the Beach
IRVINE, Calif.--Long Beach State and UC Irvine played to a 0-0 draw Sunday night at Anteater Stadium
Â
The opening 10 minutes were primarily a defensive affair, with each team holding the other at bay. Liz Worden broke through for LBSU, taking two shots that went wide in the 12th and 13th minutes. UCI threatened in the 18th minute.
Â
Kaitlyn Paculba's attempt from distance looked like it was going into the top of the Beach goal. Long Beach State goalie Aurora Schuck knocked the ball away. Mihaela Perez found the rebound and put a shot directly on goal, where Schuck caught the ball for the save. With the wind picking up, Kassandra Ceja's attempt in the 36th minute nearly danced past Ashley Naylor, but the UC Irvine goalie made the save.
Â
The Anteaters' Desiree Mendoza opened the second half with a pair of attempts, one of which was blocked and the second missing high in the 51st. The first LBSU attempt of the second half came in the 59th minute when Siena Navarra's shot was blocked.
Â
In the 66th minute, the Beach were awarded a free kick after Ivy Williams was booked for a yellow card. Ceja's pass found Natalie Arnold. Her header just missed the right side of the UCI net. Schuck saved Paculba's effort in the 68th minute. On the ensuing LBSU possession, Kailey Supa was open from eight yards out, but she went wide of the goal.
Â
Laila Behery took a wide shot in the 73rd minute. She made a second attempt at a goal in the 74th that Schuck had saved.
Â
Long Beach State's best chance of the second half came in the 78th minute. Worden's corner kick was on goal and was knocked away by Naylor. The rebound came to Ceja, who took a shot and was turned away on the goal line by UCI defender Kiera Smeenge. That rebound ended on the foot of Jordan Candelaria, who missed high and was to the left of the Anteaters' net. Â
Â
Paculba found space in the 89th minute, resulting in a 1-on-1 opportunity. She took her shot from 12 yards out, but it went high, keeping the match scoreless.
Â
UC Irvine (5-6-6, 3-2-4 Big West) outshot Long Beach State 13-9, 5-3 on goal. Schuck made five saves as she picked up her fifth shutout. Naylor tallied two saves.
