Aurora Schuck made eight saves while Liz Worden had four shots for the Beach

WAIPAHU, Oahu—The University of Hawai'i defeated Long Beach State 1-0 in the 2024 finale for the Beach Thursday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Hawai'i took the opening pair of shots in the first five minutes, with Brynn Mitchell's attempt being saved by Aurora Schuck. The Beach earned a corner kick in the 10th minute, which saw Liz Worden's set piece nearly reach the goal. Rainbow Wahine goalie Kennedy Justin grabbed the ball near the bottom portion of the goal.

Worden's attack in the 22nd minute resulted in an attempt that was blocked out of bounds, resulting in a corner kick. LBSU's attack resulted in a Kassandra Ceja header that went high, above the crossbar. The Beach threatened in the 25th minute.

Natalie Arnold was fouled, earning Long Beach State a free kick. Marissa Garcia's kick found Arnold in front of the net, where her shot was just off target. UH responded with an Izzy Ayala long-range blast, which forced Schuck to punch the ball out of bounds. LBSU successfully defended the resulting corner kick. Ceja just missed again in the 30th minute when her attempt went off the crossbar. A Hawai'i offensive attempt saw Mitchell's header go high in the 35th.

The Rainbow Wahine strung several passes together in the 43rd minute, which resulted in Tatum Porter reaching space for a shot that went high. In the final minute, Schuck punched out a Penny Noland shot in front of her goal, giving UH a corner kick. The Rainbow Wahine took advantage of the set piece as Porter scored with seven seconds remaining off a scramble in front.

The opening chance of the second half went to UH's Cate Sheahan. Her effort went left of the net in the 54th minute. The first Beach offensive attack occurred in the 55th. Worden dribbled in and took a shot that Justin saved. The rebound came out to Makayla Demelo. Her attempt was wide. Long Beach State was awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard mark in the 61st minute, but Ceja's blast was high.

Schuck was busy in the 64th when she saved a Fabiola Zamora attempt from 30 yards away. She saved a Zamora shot again four minutes later. Kana Uchida had a shot blocked inside the 18 during the 75th minute, but Hawai'i cleared the ball away. Garcia's attempt was off-target two minutes later.

After a goal kick, Worden regained possession, resulting in an attempt saved by the second UH goalie of the match, Natalie Dobler. Schuck saved Zamora's second attempt of the second half on the ensuing Rainbow Wahine possession. Dobler's second save of the match was again off a Worden attempt with 10 minutes remaining.

The Beach earned a corner kick in the 85th minute. Dobler grabbed Worden's effort out of the air to turn back LBSU. With 1:23 remaining, Long Beach State received a throw-in. Kylie Perez threw the ball towards the goal, where Dobler saved Kailey Supa's back heel kick. UH defended a LBSU free kick in the 89th, going to the victory.

Hawai'i (12-7-1, 8-1-1 Big West) outshot the Beach 15-12, 9-4 on goal. Both teams had six corner kicks. Schuck made eight saves. Dobler had three, with Justin being credited for one save.

Long Beach State failed to qualify for the Big West Championships. LBSU's playoff hopes were dashed Thursday night when UC Irvine defeated UC Riverside 1-0 to reach 16 points. Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Fullerton then took the final two spots as CSUB and the Titans played to a 1-1 tie, which resulted in 15 points for both clubs. The Beach ended 2024 with a 3-5-2 Big West mark for 11 points. Long Beach State was 6-9-3 overall.
